TECHNICAL SUPPORT Oglala Lakota College now provides you with technical support that is superior in quality and professionalism. It comes in the form of on-site educational support, one on one instructional aide, seminars, online, and much more. All of this service comes to you at no cost to you or your school. ACCEPTANCE of schools and/or teachers is based upon the agreement to abide by OLC NASA SEMAA Guidelines and Requirements. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SEMAA CURRICULUM " Project Description
The NASA SEMAA project uses a series of
unique hands-on, inquiry-based classroom curriculum enhancement
activities. In addition to being aligned with national math, science
and technology standards, these activities encompass the research and
technology of each of NASA's four mission directorates (Aeronautics
Research, Exploration Systems, Science and Space Operations). On
average, NASA SEMAA students participate for a total of 36 hours each
year, 21 hours during the academic year and 15 hours during the summer.
NASA SEMAA graduates who have participated in the entire K-12 program
will have completed 441 hours of advanced studies in STEM prior to
their enrollment in a post-secondary institution.
Aerospace Education Laboratory Developed by NASA and equipped with 10 workstations, the Aerospace Education Laboratory,
or AEL, is an electronically enhanced, computerized classroom that puts
cutting-edge technology at the fingertips of NASA SEMAA middle- and
high school-aged students. Each computerized research station provides
students with real world challenges relative to both an aeronautics and
microgravity scenario. Examples of the real aerospace hardware and
software contained in the AEL include an Advanced Flight Simulator; a
laboratory-grade, research wind tunnel; and a working, short-wave
receiver and hand-held Global Positioning System for aviation. In
addition to being an extraordinary tool for educating middle and high
school students, the AEL serves as an excellent training facility for
pre-service teachers on the NASA SEMAA curriculum.
Unique to the NASA project, the Family Café
is an interactive forum that promotes sustained family involvement at
each of the NASA SEMAA sites around the country. The Family Café
engages SEMAA parents and adult family members in up to 21 hours of
Family Focus Group sessions each year, during which time participants
are engaged in dialogue focused on relevant parenting and STEM
education information. In addition to Focus Groups, the Family Café
hosts a multitude of Family Night activities and other special events
that promote parent and adult family member participation in student
learning.
The NASA SEMAA project currently boasts
14 sites located throughout 12 states and the District of Columbia.
These site locations include community colleges, four-year colleges and
universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic
Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities,
primary/secondary schools, science centers and museums. Collectively,
the SEMAA sites have inspired, engaged and educated over 350,000
students, parents and adult family members and teachers from 2004
through 2008.
Each NASA SEMAA site is required to
develop a Sustainability Plan to enhance local project operations, as
well as to ensure project sustainability beyond NASA funding. During
the 2008 fiscal year, NASA SEMAA sites leveraged a network of 200+ partners
that contributed a record number of sustaining funds for SEMAA in
excess of $3.9 million (including both financial and in-kind support).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Aerospace Education Laboratory
There are currently 24 AELs located throughout the Country and in Puerto Rico, including one at each of the 14 SEMAA sites. Classes are conducted in the AEL utilizing different scenarios covering all of NASA's science and technical missions. In addition to serving as a state of-the-art laboratory for SEMAA classes, the AEL also engages community groups, outside organizations, and the general public at large in exciting outreach programs conducted year-round. The AEL workstations are equipped with aerospace hardware and software that model real-world challenges in the areas of aeronautics and microgravity. In ten unique workstations, visitors can explore technology through 'hands on/minds on' activities that model real-world challenges in aerospace.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY CAFE' "What Is the Family Café?This is an online resource for the
adult caregivers of children who are currently participating in, or are
interested in participating in the NASA SEMAA program.
Understanding Family Involvement Overwhelming evidence from research suggests that when families get personally involved in education, their children do better in school and grow up to be successful in life. Yet, family involvement is one of the most overlooked aspects of American education. Today, many programs are designed without recognition of the role of families, and consequently many families remain unaware of the significance that their role can have on their child's education. Family involvement is an important component of the NASA Explorer Schools project. The purpose of the family involvement component is to engage families as partners in the educational process. The family involvement program herein was developed to give families, regardless of their own educational experience, the tools needed to become more actively involved in their child's day-to-day education. Philosophy "We believe that children, parents/families, and teachers are partners in the educational process, and must be respected and appreciated for their individual needs and roles." Goals
Overview The Family Café is an interactive forum that provides educational and parenting information to adult caregivers and any other supportive, adult role models while their NASA SEMAA student is in class. The Family Café also puts these adults in touch with various local resources and programs that are available for the student. Typically, the Family Café meets for 3-hour sessions over seven consecutive Saturdays for a total of 21 hours of participation. Each 3-hour session features hands-on learning activities, lively group discussions, and dynamic guest speakers. A trained Family Café Coordinator plans and facilities each session. In addition to the Saturday Model, the Family Café also exists as both an After-School and In-School Model. These models may include multiple sessions of a 1-3 hour duration or single "Family Nights," taking the form of a Star Party, Science Night, Interactive Tour, etc. As with the Saturday Model, each session is facilitated by a trained Family Café Coordinator and features hands-on learning activities, lively group discussions, and dynamic guest speakers.
